In a significant move to enhance Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) agricultural sector, 20 students departed yesterday for China under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) scholarship program. This initiative aims to equip PNG’s youth with advanced skills to drive the nation’s development.
Dr. Clement Waine, a consultant for PNG’s STEM curriculum, highlighted the strategic importance of this scholarship. He noted that the selected Chinese university specializes in agri-power development, making it an ideal institution for these students.
By studying agri-power development, engineering, and business models, these students will acquire the expertise needed to transform PNG’s agricultural landscape upon their return.

The selection process was rigorous, with 54 students chosen based on merit, all achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. These students excelled in both national and STEM-specific examinations, positioning them among the country’s top academic performers. The STEM curriculum emphasizes practical learning, ensuring students are well-prepared for the rapidly evolving global environment.
Dr. Waine also mentioned that the engineering program was introduced to Grades 11 and 12 in 2021, allowing current students to begin their engineering foundation early, which is both time and cost-effective.
This initiative reflects PNG’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and economic growth. By investing in education and international partnerships, the nation is laying the groundwork for a prosperous and sustainable future.
