Holy Eucharist Primary School in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, needs additional classrooms and teachers’ houses to cater for the increase in student enrollment.
The school needs four classrooms as the existing buildings do not have the capacity to accommodate the high number of students enrolled at the school this year.
A total of 618 students have enrolled at the Catholic-agency school.
Head teacher Peter Kume said apart from the classrooms, five houses are needed to accommodate teachers and their families.
He said of the 16 teachers, only five were allocated houses within the school while the rest reside in Goroka, which is 5km away.
The school’s board of management has submitted request for funds from the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government through the provincial education office.
Another submission for a double classroom was forwarded to the Goroka district development authority, early this year. The board is still waiting for a response.
The school is located at Nalepa, 4km south of Goroka, along the Highlands Highway.
The four-year-old school held its pioneering grade 8 class graduation in December last year. Of the 65 graduating students, 43 continued to high school. The school topped seven other Catholic-agency schools in the province.
