Madang Teachers College will have further disruptions to its academic year following the death of a non-teaching staff member last Friday afternoon.

Roy Makel, MBE and a recipient of the Logohu Award for outstanding services to the community, collapsed in his office around 2.30pm and was pronounced dead at 3.10pm at the Modilon General Hospital.

It is believed Makel, originally from East Sepik, suffered a stroke.

A staff of the school who did not want to be named confirmed the death and said it was a loss for the school as Makel was a former registrar and incumbent campus manager.

The source said Makel’s body was in the morgue awaiting final funeral arrangements by his family.

The school is still mourning the loss of five of its six students missing from the sunken mv Rabaul Queen.

Only one student who survived the ordeal is back for second year.
