Students in harassment video identified

5 male students at the University of Technology involved in the harassment of a mentally handicapped female have been identified from the viral video, The National reports.

The video of incident, which occurred on Saturday night, shows a young woman identified as 20 year old Louise Wamas being mocked, groped and harassed as she is ushered out of the campus by university security. Meanwhile, Ms Wamas’ family have laid a formal complaint with police.

According to Wamas’ aunt, Melin, the young woman suffers from depression and malaria that is affecting her mentally. She said this has led to Wama’s having episodes of violence and ‘talking funny’. However, she said, no woman should treated in such a manner by students who are supposed to become future fathers and leaders.

The video, which has also garnered international scrutiny sparked outrage with the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Ora Renagi, condemning the actions of the student stating that harassment is a crime and would not be tolerated. Meanwhile, chancellor, Sam Koim, also described the students behavior as animalistic and unacceptable.

The university’s senior executive management said investigations are ongoing and students identified would face the school disciplinary action and be referred to the police.
