50th Independence Anniversary Essay Competition for All Tertiary including Technical Colleges and Institutions

In commemorating the 50th Independence Anniversary of our country, the Department of Prime Minister (DPM) is inviting interested participants from universities and colleges nationwide to enter into the essay writing competition on a theme entitled:

Reflecting on the role of the Department of Prime Minister in supporting the Prime Minister and the public service since independence

By way of background, the Department of Prime Minister plays an important tole in directly supporting the Prime Minister in terms of whole of Government policy coordination and monitoring. This is achieved through central agency coordination, sectoral participation, inter-government coordination and implementation of policy by respective departments and agencies.

As Papua New Guinea turns 50, the Department’s role in supporting the Prime Minister remains relevant, yet challenging in terms of the evolving geopolitical and socio-economic development challenges faced by the country.

Looking into the future, the increasing use of information technology and artificial intelligence imposes unique challenges that the Department must continue to address.

Proposed Criteria

  • Word limit (2500 to 3000 words)
  • Font type and size (Calibri body, 12)
  • Structure (Introduction, body, recommendation and conclusion)
  • Proper sentence structure and composition
  • Sound analytical and research skills
  • References and bibliography

Strictly No Plagiarism, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as this will lead to automatic disqualification.

The top 6 entries will be selected by independent judges to be announced during the Department’s independence celebration as the Melanesian Haus, Waigani, on 12th September 2025.

Acting Chief Secretary to Government will present the winning prizes during the celebration. A return ticket and one night’s accommodation will be provided for winning candidates outside of Port Moresby.

Deadline for the essay competition is Thursday, 4th September 2025 at 4:06pm
