Garam Primary School in the Umi Atzera LLG, Markham district, Morobe province, observed Global Handwashing Day on Friday.
The day was witnessed by the World Vision PNG, under the Water Sanitation and Hygiene program that had students taught on the basics of health and hygiene.
Garam caters for more than 450 students that come from six big communities in the LLG and is one of a few other selected schools in Markham district that come under the Water for Women, WaSH project implemented by World Vision PNG.
Students, teachers, parents and nearby communities gathered to participate to mark the global event with the theme “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene”.
WaSH project officers constructed three modules of water and hygiene facilities that can be used in rural and semi-urban areas and they include a tipi-tap, a safe house, and a pump.
The school itself created a School Hygiene Club consisting of mixed grade students that demonstrated the eight steps in hand washing.
Garam Primary School head teacher Leon Ano said the WaSH program carried out a befitting awareness in the school that will have a positive impact in the children’s lives.
He thanked the invited guests and others who participated to make the event a success.
Program support services lead for World Vision PNG, Johnny Yep said education and health go together.
He said in order for the children to learn properly, they have to be in good health and that starts from simply making hand washing a habit.
Children it is your responsibility to carry out the awareness that was taught to you by the WaSH officers. If your parents are preparing a meal without washing their hands, you have to tell them to stop and wash their hands first.

Students participated in dramas and quizzes and they were awarded packets of soap as prizes.
