Student asks court to drop murder charge

A grade 11 student has asked a court to dismiss a wilful murder charge against him so he can return home to continue his studies.

Bill John, 21, of Barakau village in Rigo, Central said he was wasting valuable time being remanded in prison when he should be in school.

I have also lost loved ones while in prison so I’m asking if this court can dismiss my case so I can return to my family and go to school.

Bill John

John was charged with the murder of Filipino Romulo Dominigo Antonio in February and remanded.

Waigani committal court Magistrate Paul Puri Nii told John that missing families and being deprived of education were consequences faced by accused people in prison.

Being in the prison will make you miss your loved ones and that is natural. I will not entertain your appeal as (the charge) of wilful murder is serious.

I will give police another month to provide evidence in court.

Magistrate Paul Puri Nii

He said police were “obtaining evidence to substantiate the allegation against you“.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Christian Iga told the court that the police were still gathering information.

The case was adjourned to Sept 15
