Governor calls for closure of campus

The Governor for Northern province, Gary Juffa, has called for the closure of the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) Oro campus, The National reports.

Governor Juffa made the call after recent attacks on the students. He said the campus needed to be shut down and students sent to Vudal in East New Britain (ENB) province. He also said it was unfair to retain the students as there is no conducive learning environment.

It’s unfair to retain them there, there’s no conducive learning environment.

Juffa added that the campus lacked the proper infrastructure and capacity required to cater to the students’ academic needs and welfare. He said the campus, as a government body, is the responsibility of the main campus in Vudal. However, there has not been any financial support.

The academic staff are not ready to receive students because they don’t have the capacity to adequately teach the students. Yet they sent 80 students there.

For some reason, all the funds had been kept in East New Britain.

There have been a number of attacks on students by criminals. Unfortunately, there is no funding for the university to secure the campus.

Juffa further added that the students did not want to remain in Oro as they are worried for their safety.

Meanwhile, staff on the ground have reportedly said that the campus was not ready to receive students but the decision was made at headquarters.
