Lecturer calls for fair reporting in media

A lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) has called on the mainstream media in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to report fairly and reporting on news that will change the mindsets of people, The National reports.

Tourism and Hospitality Management lecturer, Ronald Raka, said the mainstream media played a major role in driving the perception of domestic and international tourists. He said recently news of violence and lawlessness has occupied the headlines and played a huge role in the decline of the tourism and hospitality business.

Raka said some negative headlines that made the news did not represent the country as a whole. He called for news on national events like cultural shows where people from several provinces gathered to showcase their cultures. He said such news would really change the way people, domestic and internationally, viewed tourism in the country.

Mr Raka also said while the global pandemic had affected the tourism and hospitality industry, domestic tourism has proven to be an important factor to the growth of the sector.
